Joni Pevarnik
Joan Pevarnik has been a studio potter with her husband Steve since graduating from NAU in 1980. The have their studios in Williams, AZ and Vail, AZ. They have kilns in both places and the life they live is a "working holiday".
The stoneware is fire to 2300 degrees F, and is completely functional as well as decorative. The raku is decorative and not to be used in a functional way. Each piece is hand-done and unique from the other. I hope you enjoy having it as much as I did making it!
Raku is a process that involves glazing the bisqued pot with a low fire glaze. The piece is fired in a kiln and removed when the glaze melts. It is pulled out of the kiln in a red hot stage and then placed in a combustible material. The ensuing smoke reacts with the glaze as it cools and gives us the unusual colors.
